March 8th marked International Women’s Day. It was a day of celebration, a day to honour women and a day to remind ourselves that we have more to do to create change for the next generation of young leading women. This year alone we’ve seen so many women use social media as a way to celebrate the beauty of womanhood. We saw Alicia Keys swap makeup for a bare face and smile proudly at red carpet events and we saw Model and mother Chrissy Teigen candidly share her experience with dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. Seeing women publicly sharing vulnerable parts of themselves in the media is empowering. It reminds us that we all have personal stories to tell, stories that are enough to inspire an individual to see value in themselves. We’re seeing women open up, share their scars and embrace their personal journey in a way that is empowering for us all. Just yesterday I saw a video of Model and Beauty blogger, Breeny Lee shave her head as a way to mark her journey to self discovery and self love. It was beautiful to see a young woman share her story with her viewers and encourage them by taking the steps to love and value herself. ‘I don’t exist to be beautiful, I am more than that’ Breeny Lee says in her video. That statement alone is empowering in every sense of the world.
It’s honest conversations and candid moments like this that remind us that we women are more than worth it. We’re strong, beautiful, daring, courageous, risk takers and leaders. The most encouraging part of all is that we all have different stories to tell, different stories that have the potential to touch lives and impact generations. The stories are all within us and it’s up to us to reveal the beauty of our inner selves day by day.
